Glen Rock has hired a new Recreation Director who states, âI am all in. I am ready and happy to serve the residents of Glen Rock.â
Bryan started his career as a science teacher. During the summer months, he oversaw the lake at the Wyckoff YMCA. After 2 years, he was asked to become a full time employee in the aquatics department. He then became the Aquatic Director for the Wyckoff YMCA for 12 years. before he came to Glen Rock.
Bryan also has a large background of endurance sports, running triathlons, and being involved in the Oakland rec. programs. One of the favorite things about being involved in the rec. programs, is coaching his 3 kids. Bryan explained why its a favorite. âIt’s been fun for me to be involved with with my kids lives in a way that integrates their classmates too.â By doing this, it has also helped him to appreciate and understand the, the struggles that families have with youth sports and the difficulties that go into, into those programs.
Why did he apply for the Recreation Director position? Per Bryan, â I thought that it sounded like a perfect fit. I was ready for a change.â
Bryan has been working closely with Council President Mary Barchetto, Councilwomen Jill Orlich, and Teresa Gilbreath on senior events and programing. While we talked about the empty nesters Cocktail hour, he mentioned that, âMany seniors are new to being seniors. We need to listen to what they are, and older seniors, are interested inâ This and other niche demographic groups are things he wants to look at and possibly create programing to help them feel comfortable and provide opportunities.
When asked about Bryan, Councilwoman Jill Orlich, Park and Recreation liaison, stated, âThe Mayor and Council are thrilled to have Bryan join us as Recreation Director. He brings a broad range of knowledge and experience, and also a real commitment to public service and helping our residents. His dedication and ideas will help us to keep Glen Rickâs recreational facilities and programming the best it can be.â

Scientists say they have the first recorded video evidence of narwhals using tusks not only to strike and manipulate fish during feeding but also engage in what appears to be playful behavior, according to the latest research.
The narwhal, often referred to as the âunicorn of the seaâ in a nod to its trademark tusk, has long remained an enigma. Scientists have observed few interactions of narwhals in their natural habitat, creating speculation about the purpose of the speciesâ distinctive spiraling tusk.

Found predominantly in males, the tusk grows up to 10 feet (3 meters) long â and previous research has suggested it serves as a competitive display to secure mates. But now, with the help of drones, research conducted in the Canadian High Arctic has uncovered that a narwhal may use its tusk for more than just courtship.
In total, the researchers newly identified and described 17 distinct behaviors of narwhals involving prey. The findings revealed a wide range of interactions and dynamics between narwhals and fish as well as the extraordinary agility, precision and speed of their tusks to track moving targets, according to the study published February 27 in the journal Frontiers in Marine Science.
âSeeing that these animals are not actually hunting the fish but exploring, manipulating and interacting with it was really a game changer,â said lead author Dr. Gregory OâCorry-Crowe, a research professor in the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute at Florida Atlantic University.
Since so little is understood about this whale species, researchers like OâCorry-Crowe and his colleagues are working diligently to conduct studies to document narwhalsâ unknown behaviors to better understand how these animals adapt in a rapidly shifting habitat as oceans warm and sea ice melts.
Narwhal exploratory behavior
The study team captured the groundbreaking footage using drones in Creswell Bay, on the eastern side of Somerset Island in Canadaâs Nunavut territory, during the summer of 2022.
As the researchers analyzed the footage, they noticed subtle nuances in the narwhalsâ behavior. Footage even captured one instance of a narwhal interacting with a fish by repeatedly nudging it with its tusk â which is actually a giant tooth â without attempting to eat it.
When researchers observed a lack of aggression in some interactions between narwhals and fish, they realized these scenarios were more similar to a cat-and-mouse game, in which the animals were chasing or âplayingâ rather than hunting, OâCorry-Crowe said.

The cost of tariffs has become âprohibitive to almost every company,â Tianchen Xu, senior economist at Economist Intelligence Unit.
