Borough Senior Services

The Big Sweep is a community program where volunteers sign up to assist seniors by raking leaves in the fall. Seniors can request assistance by calling the Borough Administrative Office at 201-670-3956. This program is dependent on volunteers signing up. Volunteers are matched with requests from seniors. Every attempt will be made to respond to a request for help, but there is no guarantee.  For additional information contact the Deputy Clerk at 201-670-3956

Snow Removal is a similar program to The Big Sweep. Volunteers signup to assist seniors when it snows by shoveling their walkways and sidewalks. Seniors can request this assistance by calling the Director of Parks and Recreation Office.  Volunteers are then matched with seniors who have requested help. There is no specified time frame as to when the volunteer may be able to shovel. For additional information contact the Director Parks and Recreation 201-670-3951 x1.

for those senior residents who live alone and are unable to place recycling to the curb for normal pickup, DPW can arrange to pick up recycling from the back of the house. This service is intended for those senior residents who are physically unable to put their recycling to the curb and must be re-applied for at Borough Hall prior to the start of each year.  For more information contact  DPW Office 201-670-3980.

Senior housing is located in the center of town within easy walking distance of banks, pharmacies, restaurants, dry cleaners, delis, and other conveniences. Residents, relatives of residents, and even those not from town can apply to live in the senior housing facility.
While senior housing enables quality of life without the responsibilities of owning and maintaining a home, it is an independent living facility and not intended for those needing assisted living or nursing care.
While this is a Borough asset for our senior residents, the complex is run by an independent group. Applications for Glen Courts can be obtained directly from the management by visiting the management office or calling. There are 80 units available for seniors. Most are one-bedroom apartments, though there are several two-bedroom apartments available.

The Senior Shuttle is a free service that provides transportation for Glen Rock seniors.  The shuttle has a set weekly schedule that includes local grocery stores and shopping centers. It is also available to help residents get to doctors’ appointments.

The shuttle picks up residents at Glen Courts on scheduled shopping days. Residents who do not live at Glen Courts can call (201) 670-3956 to arrange pick up at their residence.

  • Tuesdays – Stop & Shop (9am)
  • Thursdays – Local Shopping Mall (11am)
  • Fridays – Kilroy’s (9am)

The Thursday trips to local shopping malls include Garden State Plaza, Bergen Town Center and Paramus Park.  The schedule rotates weekly; to learn more call (201) 670–3956.

Arrange A Ride:
The shuttle is available Monday – Friday between 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM to bring resident seniors to local doctor appointments.  The shuttle will pick you up at home and bring you to the appointment, and then after the appointment it will bring you back home.  To schedule a pickup, call (201) 670–3956.

*For increased COVID safety, the shuttle is running with reduced capacity to promote social distancing. All riders must wear face coverings.*

Health and safety Services

Any senior resident living alone, or possibly needing assistance should register with the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) so they can assist, and better prepare for your needs before, during and after a storm or other natural disaster. The OEM Management will assign another resident to communicate and check on your needs to keep you safe and informed.  For more information contact Joanne Perry or Borough Administration Office.

All senior residents are encouraged to obtain a File of Life magnetic pocket kit for their refrigerator. The card enables medical personnel to obtain a quick medical history in an emergency.  To obtain a File of Life kit or ask questions contact Joanne Perry or the Borough Administration Office.  For more information contact Joanne Perry or Borough Administration Office.

Flu shots are provided to seniors on Medicare B at no charge at Borough Hall in the fall. Dates are announced several weeks in advance on the website, via email and in the Gazette.  The Community Bus is available to provide transportation to and from Borough Hall.  For more information contact Borough Administration Office.

This is a free program the Borough contracts with the County to provide a number of services including health history evaluation, blood pressure measurement, height and weight, individualized counseling and education, referral and follow-up, and confidential consultation with a public health nurse.

This program is held on the premises of Glen Courts at 1 Glen Ave on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. While held at Glen Courts, it is open to any resident.  For more information contact Borough Administration Office.
