On Saturday August 6, 2022, Kona Ice of Fair Lawn presented Mayor Kristine Morieko with a check for $2,500 to sponsor Sycamore Park improvements. On hand were owners Sam & Jessalyn Nasab, Mayor Morieko (and Jr. Mayors, Brayden & Maddie Morieko), Council President Teresa Gilbreath, Councilmember Jill Orlich along with DPW members who performed the bulk of the work.
This project began after Lila (11) and Madelyn (9) Cahalan emailed Mayor Morieko with a request for Sycamore Park. Decades ago, local parents installed and maintained a basketball court which had become covered in moss, developed potholes and had downed trees. The girls wished to have an accessible, safe basketball court in which to play at their park. The Mayor met with the girls on site, listened to their concerns and began making calls. Without a line item in the budget, the Mayor sought local resources on Facebook, which led Sam and Jessalyn Nasab to offer their help.
For three weeks, the Kona Ice truck parked outside the Glen Rock Pool during “Wednesday Night Something” and 100% of the proceeds were earmarked for the Borough. DPW director, Bob Buono devised a plan and executed the refurbishment of the court by removing all moss and downed trees, filling potholes, painting court lines and repainting the backboards and installing new nets. The budget was sponsored by Kona Ice and all repairs and improvements have been made.
“This was a tremendous display of community collaboration with Kona Ice of Fair Lawn and the dedication of our Borough Employees. I am so proud of what we were able to accomplish.” – Mayor Morieko
