Born and raised in Mansfield PA, Joan Lunn Hirning was the daughter of a well-known professor at Mansfield University and a music aficionado mother.
After graduating from Wilson College as a language teacher, Joan married the man of her dreams, Herbert Hirning, and moved to Cresskill NJ. She then landed in Glen Rock NJ in 1969, her forever home. Here she raised her 2 daughters Kristen and Katie and taught French and special ed at Glen Rock Sr. High School. While teaching, she was very involved with the exchange programs – German, French, and Czech Republic.
After retiring, she remained involved in the Schools through the exchanges, being a tutor, or an SAT monitor. Joan was very involved with the community through the Community Church, Republicans club, and dog rescue. She was the mom to 5 rescue furbabies – Josie, Beau, Porkchop, Teddy, and Tess. She loved her furbabies.
Joan was a force to be reckoned with. From her politics to her love for Glen Rock. Nothing stood in her way of making sure that everyone knew her love of the Rock. She bent over backward for former students, old friends, and even the new members in the Glen Rock Community to make sure they felt safe, loved and welcome.
Glen Rock was Joan’s home and love. She loved the kindness of the residents – whether they were friends or strangers. They stepped up to the plate to help, just as she did.
Please stay tuned for memorial service information on GRNT.
Rest in Peace Joan, and thank you for all you did for GRNT and Glen Rock
