Each year Coleman students vote for their favorite picture book of the year.
The author and illustrator are informed that they have won a COLE-decott Medal, a play-on-words-version of the American Library Association’s annual Caldecott Medal, and are invited to Coleman School to receive their award in person.
Last year students elected Elisha Cooper’s Big Cat, Little Cat their COLE-decott winner. On January 25, Mr. Cooper spent the day at Coleman. He enjoyed a tour of the school hosted by two fifth graders, spoke to students about his life as a writer and illustrator, shared illustrations from his yet to be published River, autographed copies of Big Cat, Little Cat, lunched with a small group of students, played football with fifth graders at recess, painted a canvas as a gift to the library and received a standing ovation as he was awarded his COLE-decott Medal. The Coleman School HSA sponsored Mr. Cooper’s visit.
