Glen Rock football returned to action Thursday on a winning note as the Panthers opened the 2022 season with a 28-6 road victory over Garfield. The Panthers’ rebuilt offensive line dominated the host Boilermakers as Glen Rock rushed for 268 yards and four touchdowns, while the defense shut down the Garfield passing attack, sacking the quarterback four times and scoring the first points of the game on a safety.
Senior defensive end Aiden Burkhardt had two sacks and a tackle for loss for Glen Rock, and on offense, as a running back, he rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown. Fellow senior Hayden Yuzon ran for 93 yards and two touchdowns, and Coach Jim Kurz’ two-quarterback system worked perfectly as seniors Andrew Knight and James Stewart both played well and moved the offense. Knight had two long runs, of 32 and 30 yards, and Stewart ran for the Panthers’ final touchdown, which put Glen Rock up 28-0.
Garfield scored on its final drive, working against Glen Rock’s backups. Time ran out as the Boilermakers scored their touchdown, and the officials did not allow Garfield to attempt an extra point.
With their regular field at Garfield High School undergoing renovations, the game was played in the cramped confines of Garfield’s junior football field. Glen Rock’s next game will be Friday, Sept. 9 at home against Becton.
