Glen Rock football players earn postseason honors

Five Glen Rock football players earned first-team honors in the North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Colonial Division in the 2019 season, with another five earning second-team honors, and two others earning Honorable Mention recognition.

Seniors Chris Fink and Liam Miele, both offensive and defensive linemen, senior running back/linebacker Greg Schlett, and seniors Anthony Scotto and Owen Stephenson, both receivers/defensive backs, were named to the NJIC Colonial First Team. Schlett also was named Second Team all-Bergen County.

Senior two-way lineman Connor Kazanjian, senior receiver/defensive back/kicker Matt Theuerkauf; junior quarterback Ty Scherer, and sophomores Nolan Clark, a two-way lineman, and Andrew Sara, a running back/linebacker, were named to the Second Team. Senior defensive lineman Ben Katzman and senior linebacker Mike Maurice were Honorable Mentions.

Glen Rock finished 5-4 on the season, losing in the first round of the North Jersey Group 2, Section 2 playoffs to Newton, 28-27. The Panthers finished 4-2 in Colonial Division play, losing their first two games and winning their final four. Glen Rock split its two NJIC crossover games, losing to Hawthorne and beating Pompton Lakes.

Fink, the center, and Miele, the left tackle, anchored the offensive line; Schlett, who switched from quarterback to running back after the first game, ran for 294 yards and five touchdowns, caught seven passes for 87 yards and completed five of 10 passes for 91 yards on the season. Scotto and Stephenson tied for the team lead with 19 receptions each, and each had one touchdown.

Scherer, who took over as the quarterback in Week 2, passed for 1,017 yards, completing 70 of 126 passes (55.6 percent), with four touchdowns and one interception. He ran for 349 yards and 10 touchdowns, and caught one pass, for 13 yards.

Sara led the team in rushing, with 475 yards on 93 rushes (5.1 yards per carry) and four touchdowns. On defense, he had two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown.
