4:04 PM – A Glen Rock resident reported that they contracted with a Paterson-based home improvement contractor to repair their roof. The contractor had been recommended by a cable tv repair technician who had been working at their home. The resident also checked with two seemingly legitimate references which were provided.
The contractor provided an estimate of $ 16,500 for the work and requested a $ 7,000 deposit for materials. After the agreement was finalized, the contractor requested that the resident accompany them to the bank as the contractor did not have a bank account and would not be able to cash the check. Following this transaction, the project was scheduled to begin on or about March 6th.
When the work did not begin as scheduled, the resident contacted the contractor who stated that he was sick and provided the option of waiting for him to recover or to reimburse the deposit which had been paid. After a series of email communications, a refund was requested on March 16th after which the contractor stopped communicating with the resident.
The matter has been referred to the detective bureau for review.

1:53 PM – Patrols, along with Firefighters, were dispatched to Rock Road and Isabella Place after a fire erupted from a Toyota Prius hybrid. The driver told responding officers that while he was driving west on Rock Road, he heard a pop from the rear of his 2005 Toyota Prius after which smoke began to fill the passenger compartment. The driver then stopped and exited the vehicle.
While awaiting the arrival of Firefighters, officers observed flames erupt which spread through the interior of the vehicle. Upon arrival Glen Rock and Fair Lawn Firefighters spent approximately 30 minutes extinguishing the fire and making the vehicle safe for transport to a tow yard.
Electric and hybrid vehicles pose unique safety challenges to first responders. Both types of vehicles run on high-voltage lithium-ion batteries, which can result in dangerously high temperatures when these vehicles catch fire. Emergency responders are also at risk of electric shock from damaged lithium batteries when handling hybrid and electric vehicles that catch fire. Lithium-ion batteries burn hotter, and faster and require far more water to extinguish when a fire erupts.
