4:04 PM – A Glen Rock resident reported that they contracted with a Paterson-based home improvement contractor to repair their roof.  The contractor had been recommended by a cable tv repair technician who had been working at their home. The resident also checked with two seemingly legitimate references which were provided.

The contractor provided an estimate of $ 16,500 for the work and requested a $ 7,000 deposit for materials.  After the agreement was finalized, the contractor requested that the resident accompany them to the bank as the contractor did not have a bank account and would not be able to cash the check.  Following this transaction, the project was scheduled to begin on or about March 6th.

When the work did not begin as scheduled, the resident contacted the contractor who stated that he was sick and provided the option of waiting for him to recover or to reimburse the deposit which had been paid.  After a series of email communications, a refund was requested on March 16th after which the contractor stopped communicating with the resident.

The matter has been referred to the detective bureau for review.

1:53 PM – Patrols, along with Firefighters, were dispatched to Rock Road and Isabella Place after a fire erupted from a Toyota Prius hybrid. The driver told responding officers that while he was driving west on Rock Road, he heard a pop from the rear of his 2005 Toyota Prius after which smoke began to fill the passenger compartment. The driver then stopped and exited the vehicle.

While awaiting the arrival of Firefighters, officers observed flames erupt which spread through the interior of the vehicle.  Upon arrival Glen Rock and Fair Lawn Firefighters spent approximately 30 minutes extinguishing the fire and making the vehicle safe for transport to a tow yard.

Electric and hybrid vehicles pose unique safety challenges to first responders.  Both types of vehicles run on high-voltage lithium-ion batteries, which can result in dangerously high temperatures when these vehicles catch fire. Emergency responders are also at risk of electric shock from damaged lithium batteries when handling hybrid and electric vehicles that catch fire.  Lithium-ion batteries burn hotter, and faster and require far more water to extinguish when a fire erupts.

11:38 PM – Patrols were requested by a family member to assist an elderly Glen Rock man who reported that his wife had left home late in the afternoon to run some errands and had not yet returned.  Based upon information provided by the family, P.O. 12:28 PM – The manager of Bottle King Liquors on Prospect Street reported shoplifting which had occurred the prior evening.  The actor, who was identified through video surveillance images, had taken two cartons of cigarettes and 10 bottles of liquor valued at a total of $870.79 and left the store without paying.  Both the officer and the manager recognized the actor from a previous shoplifting arrest in December of 2022.  At that time the actor was warned that he was not welcome to return to the store.

The actor, a 35-year-old Fair Lawn man, was subsequently arrested at his home by P.O. Nick Onove, assisted by Sgt. Mike Trover and Det. Lucas Doney. He was transported to Police Headquarters where he was charged with one count each of Shoplifting and Defiant Trespass. The actor was processed and released on his own recognizance pending an appearance before Central Judicial Processing at the Superior Court in Hackensack on April 28th.

11:24 PM – A resident on the 500 block of Ackerman Avenue reported that they returned home from vacation to find that their home had been broken into and their 2020 BMW X4 was stolen.  The resident recounted to officers that they left for vacation in the early morning on April 2nd and when they returned home at the time of the report, they discovered that their home had been entered via a front window.  The only items missing from the home were two sets of keys, belonging to vehicles parked in their driveway. The keys had been left on a table next to a window by the front door.  The vehicle that was taken had its title in the glove compartment and an EZ Pass.  The resident was able to utilize the vehicle’s GPS tracking system which tracked the vehicle to the City of Newark.  The vehicle was entered in NCIC as stolen, and the Newark Police Department was notified of its last known location.

The Detective Bureau is currently investigating.

2:26 PM – A Glen Rock resident reported that their child’s bicycle was stolen from outside of the CVS store at 175 Rock Road.  The bicycle had been left unlocked and unattended by the front door while the child was inside.  The manager of the CVS store reviewed video surveillance footage, however, the incident occurred just outside of the range of the store’s surveillance system.  No other witnesses were located.

2:39 PM – The management of the Glen Rock Inn requested assistance after a customer left the restaurant without paying their bill.  The woman had consumed $20.26 worth of alcohol and left without making any attempt to pay.  Based upon the description provided, P.O. Murray Yang located the actor walking along Rock Road near the Main Line Station.  When approached by the officer she ran off and was subsequently apprehended by P.O. Yang and P.O. Nick Onove following a foot chase up Rock Road to the area of Isabella Place.

The actor, a 29-year-old Hawthrone woman, was transported to Police Headquarters where she was processed and charged with one count each of Theft of Services and Resisting Arrest.  She was released on her own recognizance pending an appearance in Glen Rock Municipal Court.
