10:43 AM – A Glen Rock couple reported being the victim of an attempted scam. They received a phone call from a male who claimed to be a public defender acting on behalf of their son. The purported attorney claimed that their son had been arrested and that they needed to supply $ 22,000 for bail. The residents, realizing that this was a scam, told the caller that they needed time to go to the bank and withdraw the necessary funds, and would call back when they had the money.
After contacting the police for assistance, the residents called back the scammer to inform them that the money was ready. They were told that a bail bondsman would respond to their home and that the money should be in a box with their son’s name and a case number on it.
When the individual arrived at the home it turned out to be a rideshare driver who was expecting to pick up a person, not a package. The driver contacted the individual who ordered the rideshare and was instructed to deliver the package to an address in the Bronx or they would report them to the rideshare service. When the driver attempted to message back the individual with questions, the ride was canceled.
The Detective Bureau is continuing to investigate this matter.
