Widespread Rain Soaks Atlanta, Rome, Athens, and Gainesville Sunday Into Monday With Heavy Downpours and Wet Roads Lingering for the Morning Commute

ATLANTA, GA — Widespread rain is taking over Metro Atlanta and North Georgia Sunday afternoon and will last into the overnight hours. Some heavier downpours are possible, though thunderstorms are relatively unlikely. Rainfall totals will be highest where heavy downpours persist over the same areas for an extended period. The back edge of the rain is expected to move through the metro early Monday, leaving wet roads for the morning commute.

Rain Spreads Across Metro Atlanta and North Georgia Sunday Afternoon

The hour-by-hour model shows widespread rain covering much of North and Central Georgia by 3 PM Sunday. Atlanta, Carrollton, Rome, Canton, Gainesville, and Athens are all under steady rain during the afternoon.

Heavier downpours are shown west of Rome and into northern Alabama near Huntsville. Lighter rain extends east toward Washington and Augusta, where coverage is more scattered.

Heavier Downpours Develop Near Thomaston and Rome by Early Evening

By 5 PM, rain continues across most of the region, with heavier pockets developing near Thomaston and areas farther south. A few heavier cells are also shown near Rome and Canton in northwest Georgia.

These heavier bursts could cause brief ponding on roads and reduced visibility. Areas that see repeated downpours will likely end up with the highest rainfall totals by Monday morning.

Steady Overnight Rain Continues Across the Region

Rain is expected to continue across Metro Atlanta and much of Georgia through the overnight hours. By 2 AM Monday, the model shows widespread rain still covering Atlanta, Covington, Griffin, Eatonton, and Milledgeville.

Some of the heaviest rain overnight is shown south of Thomaston and Milledgeville. Northern areas, including Gainesville and Clayton, continue to see steady but lighter rain.

Back Edge Moves Through Atlanta Early Monday

By 6 AM Monday, the back edge of the rain is shown moving east of Atlanta. Rome, Carrollton, and much of the western metro are expected to be drying out by that time.

Rain is still shown lingering near Athens, Gainesville, Clayton, Washington, Eatonton, and Milledgeville early Monday morning. These areas may hold onto showers a bit longer as the system moves east.

Monday Morning Commuters Should Expect Wet Roads

Even as the rain ends across Metro Atlanta, wet roads are likely for the Monday morning commute. Drivers should allow extra travel time and watch for standing water in low-lying areas.

Those traveling east toward Athens and Augusta may still encounter rain early in the day. Residents should keep checking forecast updates as the system moves out of the region.
