TEXAS AND FLORIDA — The leftovers of Tropical Storm Vance, a Pacific system, are set to bring flooding rain to Texas over the next one to two days. The moisture will then track north into the Midwest before a piece of energy drops back south toward Florida on Sunday. By then, the system will have lost its tropical characteristics, but it is still expected to bring 1 to 2 inches of rain and make part of the weekend soggy.
Flooding Rain Targets Texas and Oklahoma on Friday
The heaviest rain from Vance’s remnants is expected to fall across Texas and into Oklahoma on Friday. A band of heavy rain stretches from northern Mexico through west and central Texas and north into Oklahoma, where flooding is the main concern.
Moisture from the Pacific system will combine with a developing area of low pressure over Texas, helping to wring out heavy downpours. Low-lying areas, creeks, and roads prone to flooding will need to be watched closely as rain totals build through the day.
Moisture Lifts North Into the Midwest Before Turning Back South
After soaking Texas, the system’s moisture will head north through Kansas, Missouri, and into the Midwest. A wide band of lighter rain is expected along this path, reaching areas near Iowa and Illinois before the pattern shifts.
A piece of energy then breaks away and drops back south through Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. Light rain is expected to spread across these states and into Georgia and the Carolinas as the low tracks toward the Southeast.
Florida Faces a Rainy Sunday With 1 to 2 Inches Possible
The leftover energy reaches Florida on Sunday, where it is expected to make the second half of the weekend wet. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are possible, with the low tracking across the central part of the state before moving offshore.
Although the system will no longer be tropical by the time it reaches Florida, it will still bring periods of steady rain. Outdoor plans on Sunday may need a backup option, and drivers should be ready for wet roads and ponding in low-lying areas.
El Niño Pattern Expected to Bring More Active Weather Ahead
This unusual path for a Pacific tropical system is a sign of the strong El Niño pattern now in place. El Niño often brings a more active storm track across the southern United States, especially during the cooler months.
Residents across Texas, the Southeast, and Florida should expect more rounds of wet weather as the season continues. Staying updated with the latest forecasts will be important as additional systems move through the region in the weeks ahead.
