Sunsets Before 5 PM Arrive in Boston, New York, Chicago, and Seattle as Daylight Saving Time Ends Across the Country After Halloween Night

UNITED STATES — Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, November 1, just hours after Halloween night, and most of the country will turn clocks back one hour. Despite repeated talk of ending the time changes, Americans are still falling back this year. Once clocks change, many major cities will see the sun set before 5 p.m., with Boston going dark as early as 4:37 p.m.

Boston, New York, and Chicago Face Some of the Earliest Sunsets

The Northeast will feel the earliest darkness, with Boston’s sunset arriving at 4:37 p.m. on Sunday. New York follows at 4:52 p.m., while Washington, D.C., holds onto daylight a little longer with a 5:07 p.m. sunset.

In the Midwest, Chicago’s sun sets at 4:44 p.m., and Minneapolis comes in at 5:01 p.m. Louisville, sitting farther west in the Eastern Time Zone, keeps daylight much later with a sunset at 5:43 p.m.

Seattle, Las Vegas, and Rapid City Dip Below 5 PM in the West

Several western cities will also see sunsets before 5 p.m. once clocks fall back. Seattle’s sun sets at 4:51 p.m., Portland at 4:57 p.m., and Los Angeles at 4:59 p.m., while Las Vegas goes dark even earlier at 4:44 p.m.

Rapid City posts one of the earliest sunsets in the Mountain Time Zone at 4:42 p.m., with Denver at 4:57 p.m. Salt Lake City holds on until 5:23 p.m., while Bozeman, San Francisco, and Albuquerque all see sunsets between 5:10 and 5:12 p.m.

Atlanta, Austin, and Florida Hold Onto Daylight the Longest

The Southeast and southern Plains will enjoy the latest sunsets in the country after the time change. Atlanta leads the way at 5:45 p.m., while Austin and Louisville both see the sun set at 5:43 p.m.

Florida also keeps daylight later into the evening, with Orlando at 5:40 p.m. and Miami at 5:39 p.m. Dallas sets at 5:36 p.m., while Raleigh, Kansas City, Little Rock, and New Orleans all see sunsets between 5:13 and 5:18 p.m.

Earlier Darkness Means Adjusting Evening Commutes and Routines

The sudden shift to earlier sunsets means many drivers will be heading home in the dark starting Monday. Pedestrians, cyclists, and school bus stops will become harder to spot during the evening commute, especially in cities where the sun sets before 5 p.m.

Residents should set clocks back before going to bed Saturday night and plan for darker evenings in the weeks ahead. The time change is also a good moment to check smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries at home.
