ALABAMA — The long dry spell across Alabama is coming to an end as showers return to the state on Halloween. For most areas, the last meaningful rain fell on October 10, when Hurricane Isaias moved through the state. Light showers today will give way to more widespread rain tonight, followed by a dynamic system on Wednesday that could bring 1 to 2 inches of rain and strong to severe storms to South Alabama.
Light Halloween Showers Turn More Widespread Tonight
Showers return to Alabama today, but the rain will not be widespread or heavy. Some light rain is possible at times through the evening hours, so anyone with outdoor Halloween plans should keep rain gear nearby. Afternoon highs will reach the 70s.
Rain becomes more widespread tonight and continues into part of Sunday, though Sunday is not expected to be a washout. Temperatures will hold in the 60s across the northern half of the state, with highs near 67 degrees in central Alabama and lows around 58 degrees.
Weekend Rain Totals Stay Near Half an Inch or Less
Rain amounts over the weekend are expected to be generally half an inch or less for most places. The rain will help settle dust and dry soil, but it will not fully make up for nearly three weeks without meaningful rainfall.
Monday and Tuesday look generally dry across the state, with lows in the upper 50s. Showers begin to increase Tuesday night ahead of an approaching upper-level trough and surface cold front.
Wednesday Storms Bring Strong to Severe Risk to South Alabama
Rain and thunderstorms are likely on Wednesday as a dynamic weather system moves through the region. Some surface-based instability will be available, which could support stronger storms, with the greatest risk currently focused over South Alabama, including the Mobile area.
More specific details on timing and storm strength should become clearer by Monday, after the weekend system moves out. Wednesday will also be mild ahead of the front, with morning lows near 62 degrees in central Alabama.
Rain Totals of 1 to 3 Inches Expected Across Much of the State
Rain amounts from the midweek system are expected to range from 1 to 2 inches, with locally heavier totals possible. Projected totals through the week show around 2.2 to 2.6 inches in parts of north and central Alabama, with some areas near the Georgia border reaching around 3 inches.
South Alabama is projected to see lighter totals of about 1.2 to 1.6 inches. Dry and seasonal weather returns for the end of the week and the weekend of November 7 and 8, with highs near 69 degrees and lows dropping into the upper 40s.
