The residents and the kids of Glen Rock finally had their voices heard. On September 23, 2024 The Glen Rock Board of Education held a public vote to hire Joseph Kirk as its new varsity basketball coach. Joseph Kirk was the Head Girl’s Basketball Coach at Pequannock High School before he was assistant coach at Ramapo College.
Prior to the vote several parents, students and community members came to sing their praises of current assistant varsity coach Sara Wolman. Sara has been coaching for the district for 14 years. She played varsity basketball at Glen Rock High School, class of 2006 as well at Franklin and Marshal College.
When it came time for the vote, Trustee Sharon Scarpelli requested the vote, P20, to be tabled due to having to leave the closed session meeting early. Trustee Liz Carr seconded the motion to table the vote. With a vote of 5-2 the motion to table was rejected.
Scarpelli stated she was voting no for P20 with this reason,, “I am still voting no on P20. I don’t think that anything I hear in the closed session would have changed my mind, Hearing students, parents, and coaches how can we overlook a candidate that has dedicated many years to our district and has been committed to our girls. Flabbergasted why we would not promote a woman to coach our girls basketball team.”
Carr, then announced she was voting no to P20, Liz stated, “Like Sharon Scarpelli, I left the meeting early and I was not privy to what was said. I echo what Sharon Scarpelli said. It is very Disheartening that she was not given an opportunity. I was a sitting trustee when her mother, an accomplished trustee at the time, stepped aside so her daughter could become a JV coach. This shows the caliber of the family. To disregard 14 years of dedication to the district, I will be voting no on P20.”
After the BOE closed the public comment section, they went to take a vote on this matter. The matter passed 5-2 in favor of Joseph Kirk.
On Tuesday afternoon, Joseph Kirk resigned from the position stating, ” While I was excited to coach in a local community that I have great respect for, after speaking with my wife and family, I decided to step down and return to Ramapo College where I will continue as an Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach. I wish the team nothing but the best.”
Sara Wolman is now the official Girls Basketball Varsity coach for Glen Rock High School.
