Glen Rock High School hosts in-person graduation

During these uncertain times, many school activities and traditions had to be canceled or changed to fit the social distancing and mask-wearing executive orders from Governor Phil Murphy.  As soon as it was announced that outdoor ceremonies were able to take place after 7/6, Glen Rock stepped up to the plate and created an outdoor graduation ceremony to allow the kids to walk the stage and be together one last time as a whole group. The graduates had their official graduation on June 18, 2020, in a zoom meeting. July 30th, Glen Rock Seniors were able to walk the stage and say goodbye to some of their favorite teachers and classmates. The chairs were set up in groups of 3 across the football field.  The parents and graduates lined up 6 feet apart around the baseball field to enter the ceremony observing social distancing rules. The ceremony was kicked off by graduate Caroline Goldenberg singing the National Anthem.  Afterward, there were many words of wisdom given by the class advisors, teachers, and the valedictorian – Melinda Sumers and salutatorian – Abigail Stern.  One of the class advisors told the class “Don’t look back in 10 years and regret what they have done, regret what they did not take a chance at.”  Another teacher said,  “the next chapter in their lives was supposed to be the time they fully develop into who they want to be, but because of this pandemic, they had to start early.” He then went on to comment that they were successful at maneuvering this situation.  Dr. Parent, the new Middle School, and High School Principal stated that he was very pleased with this graduation ceremony and that he liked how personal and simple it felt. “It might be a template for future graduations.”Congratulations to all of the Glen Rock 2020 seniors for reaching for the stars and accomplishing your dreams and goals during this unordinary year. As a side note, Simon Toffell stepped into place to take official photos that you will be able to buy (the yellow form you handed in)  since the originally hired photographer never showed up. They will be able to be bought by the end of the week next week.  Congrats Simon!Enjoy these pictures. Keep an eye on this page for additional pictures from Simon.
