Coming off a stinging loss to undefeated Rutherford a week ago, the Glen Rock High School football team will look to get back on the winning track Saturday when it hosts Manchester at Alan Deaett Field on Homecoming Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The team’s 10 seniors will be introduced in the moments before kickoff, and the senior cheerleaders will be recognized at halftime. During the game, the Panthers will have their hands full with trying to beat Manchester, which is 0-3, but probably a lot better than their record suggests. Last week, the Falcons lost to Waldwick-Midland Park, 35-33, when they failed on a two-point conversion in late in the fourth quarter, and the week before, they lost to Lodi, 24-21, when the Rams hit a long field goal with two minutes left in the game. The Falcons’ other loss, in the opening game of the season, was to Rutherford.
“If anyone thinks this is going to be an easy game, they’re mistaken,’’ Glen Rock coach Jim Kurz said. “This is a team that beat us lastyear, they have a decent amount of kids that have come back from that team; they know how to win – they’re not going to come in thinking they’re going to lose, they’re going to come in thinking they’re going to win – and if we don’t have the right mindset, we’re going to have our hands full. And you can’t really worry about the records; it didn’t mean anything that we were 3-0 going into (the Rutherford) game.’’
Quarterback David Boucher threw three touchdown passes against Waldwick, one to Shaq Smith, who also had a rushing touchdown in the game. Smith has two rushing touchdowns and two touchdown catches on the season. Jamal Deloach has three rushing touchdowns on the season and Boucher has four TD passes and one rushing TD.
Glen Rock should have quarterback Greg Schlett back in the starting lineup after the junior didn’t start against Rutherford. Senior receiver Ashton Dalessio scored the Panthers’ lone touchdown against Rutherford and has six touchdowns on the season.
The homecoming parade will start at 11:30 at Concord & Rock and continue down Rock Rd to the High School for a 1pm kickoff.
