The Glen Rock High School Wrestling team opened its 2017-18 dual meet season on a winning note Wednesday, beating Mahwah, 57-24, before a big crowd in the GRHS gym.
The Panthers, seeking to better their 16-10 record from last season, took advantage of a Thunderbirds squad that sent only seven varsity wrestlers to the mat. Wrestling at 160 pounds, with the new spotlight over the mat shining on him, sophomore Greg Schlett started Glen Rock off with a win, but Mahwah took a 6-3 lead before a string of forfeits put the home team in control. In all, Glen Rock collected seven wins by forfeit, and only six matches took place. The Panthers won three of those, with captains Matt Sapoff (138) and Kyle Fisher (152) pinning their opponents.
Glen Rock’s Jacob Slump won via forfeit at 195 pounds, but he has already gotten off to a fast start on the mat, having won the individual tournament at Mahwah on Saturday at 195. Fisher finished third in that same tournament.
Next up for the Panthers is an away meet Friday at Teaneck, beginning at 3 p.m. The time of that meet was changed from 6 p.m.
