The Glen Rock hockey team raised the banner commemorating its 2017 New Jersey Public B State Championship Sunday and then followed that by beating Ramsey 4-2, at their home rink in Hackensack, The Ice House.
Senior co-captain Matt Maselli recorded his first career hat trick and linemate Eddie Corvelli had the other goal, plus two assists as Glen Rock raised its record to 3-0-1 on the young season. Freshman Anthony Maurice chipped in with two assists.
Prior to the game, the state championship banner, positioned just to the left of the scoreboard above the team benches, was unveiled, with the words Glen Rock placed above the panther head, and the words 2017 State Champions underneath. The banner represented the Panthers’ first hockey state championship.
In the game itself, Maselli got the game’s first goal 45 seconds into the second period, but Ramsey tied it 1-1 3:59 later. Maselli’s second goal, with 6:31 remaining in the period, gave the Panthers the lead back and Corvelli scored on a four-on-four with 6:55 left in the third, and Maselli completed the hat trick with 5:24 remaining before Ramsey got a consolation goal with 2:05 left. Goaltender Ryan McAuley made 19 saves to get the win.
The victory got Glen Rock back on the winning track after they were fortunate to tie Wayne, 4-4 Friday night at the Ice Vault in Wayne. Maurice’s first varsity goal, with 4:44 remaining, tied the score after Glen Rock coughed up leads of 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 against the new co-op team that combines players from Wayne Hills and Wayne Valley. Corvelli had two goals in that game, and Jared Brassil the other.
The team returns to action this weekend with games Friday at 9 p.m. against Indian Hills at the Ice Vault, and Saturday at 5:30 p.m. against Lakeland Regional at the Ice House.
