A Glen Rock tragic overdose, in the midst of a major drug problem in town

On June 2nd, GRPD P.O. Sarah Orsita was dispatched to a Glen Rock residence to investigate a report of an unresponsive male with an apparent head injury.  Upon arrival, she and P.O. Mc Gill were met by a woman who identified herself as the daughter of the homeowners.  She recounted that her brother had just recently moved in with her parents, who were not home.  She became concerned for his welfare and responded to check on him.

Officers were let into the kitchen where they found a 40-year-old man on the floor in a lifeless state.  Located next to the man was a hypodermic syringe, drug paraphernalia with fresh residue, two empty glassine baggies and well as two full bundles (20 baggies) of heroin and multiple vials of suspected steroids.

Valley Hospital Paramedics responded to the scene and made the formal pronouncement at 9:21AM in cooperation with the medical staff at the Valley Hospital ER.  Det. Trover along with an investigator from the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.   The matter was found to be an accidental heroin overdose; no evidence was found to support that any other individuals were present or involved.  The remains were removed to the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office pending final action by the Medical Examiner.

“This is a tragedy for the family. Their lives are changed forever. They need to be left alone to deal with it without people trying to get all the details. Prosecutor Grewal points out “shaming” does not work. Society needs to align together to treat this as serious as homeland security. If you see or are concerned, report it. ” Councilman Skip Huisking stated. Councilman Skip Huisking has been working on this drug epidemic for several years. The Council and the Glen Rock Public Schools are working together to put a plan into place to help combat this problem.

**Per Mayer Packer, “Our plan remains to continue educating residents through the Glen Rock Municipal Alliance, Alliance events, and other events around the county that we will post on the Borough website.”

One of the first steps to make the public aware of this growing problem over the past year Glen Rock, The Glen Rock Borough Council and School district, in conjunction with Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal, hosted a special drug presentation on May 16, 2017.
