The Glen Rock High School softball team beat Rutherford for the 2nd time this season, 2-1 on Thursday to stretch their winning streak to four games and take over first place in the NJIC – Colonial Division. Glen Rock last lost on April 13, when they fell to Lodi, 1-0.
The Panthers (9-2 on the season, 9-1 in the NJIC) had already beaten Rutherford, 6-2, on the road on April 20 and Glen Rock took the lead on a solo home run in the second inning by pitcher Olivia Brencovich. Rutherford tied the game in the fifth inning, but in the bottom of the sixth, Brencovich again came through with the bat, leading off the inning with a single to left. Pinch runner Ilaria Fellini was sacrificed over to second and one out later, Hallie Johnson singled to center to drive in the go-ahead run. Brencovich then retired the visitors in order in the seventh to preserve the victory.
“The rest of the team was doing a great job, and we had a solid defense throughout the entire game,’’ Brencovich told BTN. “I knew I could trust them to get the job done and back me up. I was just focusing on hitting my spots and really making the ball move.’’
