At 7:32 pm yesterday evening, GRPD Sgt. Riggio responded to 506 Prospect Ave for smoke coming from a home. When Sgt. RIggio arrived, he found heavy smoke coming from an open front door. After confirming that no one was in the home, the GRPD attempted to make entry into the home to find the origin of the fire and see if they could extinguish it but the smoke at the front door was too heavy.
Glen Rock (GRFD) arrived on scene and called in several mutual aid companies to assist in controlling this fire. The mutual aid companies included Ridgewood (RFD), Hawthorne (HFD), Fair Lawn (FLFD) and Midland Park (MPFD).
The Glen Rock Ambulance Corps, Ridgewood Ambulance and Ridgewood Emergency Services also responded for fire scene stand by.
During the fire, two RFD firefighters were injured when they fell through the floor when it gave way. They were pulled to safety by several GRFD firefighters. Per NBC NY 4s story (link below), they included, but not limited to, Doug Sadowski, Keven Walters, and Kevin Sellitti. The RFD firefighters were then transported to the Valley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
I would like to that everyone that came to the fire. Everyone did a great job.” GRFD Chief Tom Jennings.
Chief Jennings also commented on a Channel 4 news report that “Everyone that was here was a hero honestly”
It appeared that the bulk of the fire was in the basement and is accidental.
The fire remains under investigation by the Glen Rock Police Department in cooperation with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department BCI Unit. The home was heavily damaged and has been deem uninhabitable.
