As expected, the Glen Rock Ice Hockey team was seeded No. 1 in the Public B division of the State tournament and will enjoy a first-round bye. The Panthers will enter the tournament in the second round, against the winner of the matchup between No. 16 Jackson Memorial vs. No. 17 Rumson-Fair Haven. That game will be played Friday, Feb. 24, at the Ice House in Hackensack. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
Before that, though, the Panthers have a league championship to chase. They will play Wednesday in the semifinals of the Big North league tournament at the Ice Vault in Wayne against River Dell. River Dell, which is 16-4-1 overall and 7-0-1 in the Big North Patriot Division, defeated Lakeland, 3-0, Friday in the first round of the league tournament to advance to the semifinals. Glen Rock (16-3-4 overall, 7-1 in the Big North Stripes Division) got a bye to the semis.
With their final regular season game having been played Feb. 3, the Panthers added a game to the schedule Saturday, Feb. 11, against Millburn. Playing their first game in eight days, and with a roster depleted by injury, Glen Rock fell behind by two goals early in the game on a couple of power play goals – one of them a 5-on-3 advantage. However, the Panthers ultimately rallied to tie the Millers, 4-4, thanks to a last-minute goal by junior forward John LaMacchia. LaMacchia scored with 52.5 seconds remaining, after Glen Rock pulled the goalie for an extra attacker.
Glen Rock dominated possession in the game and the Millburn goaltender was credited with 58 saves, as the Panthers outshot Millburn 62-18. Eddie Corvelli, Matt Maselli and Colin Morrow scored the other goals for Glen Rock.
